Daytime coyote sightings have been on the rise in Memphis and the surrounding areas, and cattle owners all over northern Mississippi and western Tennessee have reported losing calves at an alarming rate. In addition to his one baby buffalo, Fitch has lost 25 young cows during the past 12 months at a cost of about $300 apiece. “We can’t say for certain how many of those calves were lost to coyotes, but we know some of them were,” Fitch said. “Coyotes like to take calves during the birthing process, when the mother cow is totally helpless. They’re very opportunistic feeders.” For those who can’t solve their coyote problem through hunting or trapping, Fitch has one final bit of advice: Buy a donkey. “Donkeys just absolutely hate coyotes,” Fitch said. “They’ll graze around in a pasture and stay just as calm as can be. They’ll let coyotes walk right up on them — and then when the coyotes get too close, they’ll actually stomp them to death. “Any critter that’ll get rid of a coyote is a good critter to have around. WHY NOT SUPPORT THE WORK OF N.E.D.D.I. ? - ADOPT A DONKEY. |
