Dependent on horses, donkeys and mules for their livelihoods, victims of the severe floods in Pakistan are being taught equine first aid and care by the British charity, The Brooke. There are roughly 75,000 animals affected by the floods which have caused the most severe damage across the country in over 80 years.

According to Mohammad Faroog Malik, chief executive for The Brooke Pakistan, this is currently the only organization specifically caring for and supplying help to horses, donkeys and mules. So far over 2000 equines have been treated and vaccinated, and 5,000 more will be treated in the coming weeks. Residents are being taught to minimize the risks of respiratory and water-borne diseases and care for their animals by providing clean water and nutrition.

Working in Khyber Pakhtun Khwa and Sindh provinces of Pakistan, the organization has provided emergency treatment, vaccinations, clean water, hay and wheat bran for the animals. Food is estimated to be scarce for the next four to six months while the flooding continues.
