The
New European Distressed
Donkey Initiative is a non-profit making company,
limited by guarantee.
Established in 1990 it offers care
and safety to donkeys (and to a lesser degree, ponies) within Britain
and Europe at risk from neglect, cruelty or mal-treatment.

When BRACKEN
first came to us she had to be carried from the lorry - her feet
were so painful that she had been "walking" on her knees for months.
Of course she still has to
have treatment for her feet and knees, damage of this kind will last for ever.
It's sad to say that
most of our rescued donkeys have similar tales to tell...................
After years of neglect of her feet
MEGAN suffered with bad arthritis in her shoulders
LUCKY arrived with huge raw
patches and rotted feet;
BRIDIE needed 3 years of love
and gentleness before she would allow anyone to approach her head - imagine how many
beatings it took to create her fright.
CECILE arrived with feet so
broken she could not stand, and infested with worms and lice.
After 16 years alone
PEDRO
was terrified of people and inclined to be vicious. After lots of
T.L.C. he is a reformed character.
These are just a few
of the donkeys we care for here, and fortunately each story has a happy ending, because we
are able to provide a warm, dry stable, food and love for every donkey that comes to our
sanctuary........

Once a donkey has been taken
into our care, we continue to undertake the cost of that care month after month, year
after year. The bills increase, if anything, as the animals' requirements increase - for
example, Bracken needs painkillers nearly all the time these days, and these are VERY
expensive. We can only continue to help her if the funds are available to pay the bills.
Unlike some organisations these days N.E.D.D.I. receives no support from the Lottery fund
or similar.
We are only able to offer our
help through the support we receive from the public,
IF THAT SUPPORT
CEASES, or even decreases,
WHAT WILL HAPPEN
TO BRACKEN & BRIDIE & all the other donkeys in our care?
