He may have thought escaping from the petting zoo would be a chance to kick up his hooves.
But Nilo the donkey found himself in a tight spot when he fell into an open manhole in the Swiss town of Pratteln.
The donkey – who firemen nicknamed Shrek because of his likeness to the donkey character in the movie – plunged hind-feet-first into the manhole at the weekend.
Passerby Bruno Schneider noticed him and contacted police who in turn called firemen from Basel out to rescue him.
Police said Nilo suffered a few ‘flesh wounds’ but he was largely eee-awright. ‘He was very cool,’ said fire brigade spokesman Meinrad Stoeklin.
A team of firemen freed the 13-year-old and he is now recuperating back at the zoo.
